Village nurses on Washington Island, Fanning Island and most of Christmas Island in Kiribati work without overhead lighting, often delivering babies by lantern light or with the aid of flashlights.
For a donation of $607, Pacific Islands Medical Aid, Inc. can purchase and transport all the necessary gear for a volunteer to install a complete solar lighting set at a village clinic.
We’ve found the most effective lighting system for the village clinics consists of a 40 watt solar panel, deep cycle 12-volt battery, charge regulator, wire, two direct current lights, two work light reflectors with sockets and two on-off switches.
Transportation for the entire kit, delivered by ship from Honolulu, is $150.
There are several types of direct current lighting available, but PIMA has found that the 18 watt, 12-volt direct current, compact fluorescent bulbs work great. Each 18 watt bulb costs $23 from SolarSeller.com, lasts 10,000 hours and puts out 1,200 lumens, roughly equivalent to an 80 watt incandescent light bulb.
When direct wired to a standard work light reflector/socket purchased at any hardware store, the effect is brilliant. Two of these lights are generally installed at the nurse’s clinic often at the same location as the nurse’s living quarters.
In addition to providing life-saving medicines to isolated islands in the Pacific, PIMA also takes specially prepared boxes of medical supplies and instruments, each worth thousands of dollars … but priceless where there are none.
In partnership with Project C.U.R.E., Pacific Islands Medical Aid, Inc. purchases boxes of supplies for $150 each and sends them to the Line Islands in Kiribati by air to Honolulu and by ship to the islands where PIMA volunteers see that they get to the nurses where they are needed most on Christmas Island, Fanning (Tabuaeran), and Washington (Teraina).
To provide a box of medical supplies to each clinic on all three islands, PIMA needs to take nine boxes on each trip, two or three times a year.
Including the cost of transportation, each box of medical supplies can be donated for $275, with one hundred percent of your donation going directly to purchase and transportation.
For a donation of $1,000, we can purchase and deliver more than $20,000 worth of life-saving medicines to the nurses on isolated islands in the Republic of Kiribati, Central Pacific.
American pharmaceutical companies donate urgently needed medicines to our partner, Medical Assistance Programs, Inc. (MAP). We purchase the medicines from MAP and see that they are transported and personally delivered to the nurses in most need.
Just one nurse is responsible for the 1,500 islanders at Washington Island (Teraina), where there is no doctor. Isolated Teraina, which is 250 miles north of Christmas Island in the Central Pacific, is accessible by boat only.
Pacific Islands Medical Aid, Inc. (PIMA) plans two trips to Teraina per year, taking medicines, medical supplies, communications equipment, solar lighting and other urgently needed supplies.
Fanning Island, 80 miles southeast of Washington, has more than 2,500 inhabitants, and is served by three nurses … no doctor .. and relies on PIMA for most all of its medicines and medical supplies. Fanning is accessible by boat only.
Christmas Island, with a population of more than 5,000, has two doctors, several nurses, and often is without medicines or medical supplies of any kind.
Twice a year, we try to deliver five boxes of medicines to the Ministry of Health on Christmas Island, three to Fanning and one to Washington.

Well known heart specialist Dr. Alistair Fyfe of Dallas, Texas has volunteered to go to Christmas Island on a regular basis to see patients there diagnosed with heart problems.
As far as anyone knows, a heart doctor has never visited this impoverished and isolated island of 5,000 inhabitants in the Central Pacific.
Pacific Islands Medical Aid, Inc. (PIMA) will pay for the transportation and lodging for Dr. Fyfe and his associate for the week long stay. Dr. Fyfe and his associate will volunteer their time freely.
Dr. Fyfe, MD, PhD, FACC, is the founding partner of Cardiac Associates of Dallas on the Medical City campus. In addition to donating his time, Dr. Fyfe will take cardiac medicines and a portable EKG machine, which he will donate to the Ministry of Health on Christmas Island.
Your donation can help make Dr. Fyfe’s trip possible. PIMA has agreed to pay for two round trip coach airline tickets from Dallas to Honolulu and from Honolulu to Christmas Island for Dr. Fyfe and his associate. Total airfare costs:

Pacific Islands Medical Aid, Inc. (PIMA) needs your urgent help in restoring eyesight to islanders.
Nearly 100 islanders in Kiribati require the urgent care of an ophthalmologist. They have serious, cataracts, a blinding condition called pterygium, and other serious eye injuries.
Patients were singled out on our Primary Eye Care mission earlier this year where PIMA volunteer optometrist Dr. Scott Pike taught Kiribati nurses how to dispense eyeglasses and identify serious eye problems.
We have just learned that an ophthalmologist from California, Dr. Jeff Rutgard, is willing to travel to Christmas Island in Kiribati next February to treat these islanders … but we need the money to get him there and back, and to get some outer-islanders to the clinic on Christmas Island.
Dr. Rutgard is affiliated with Surgical Eye Expeditions (SEE) International of Santa Barbara, California. He is donating him time freely and will take all equipment, medicines and supplies necessary to treat the patients there … but needs help with the costs of transportation.
Of the nearly 100 islanders needing immediate attention, about 60 live on the outer islands of Fanning (Tabuaeran) and Washington (Teraina) and must be transported from their home islands to Christmas Island where Dr. Rutland will treat them in the only hospital in the region.
Fanning Island is about 180 miles northwest of Christmas and Washington is another 80 miles further northwest. The only way to get the patients from these islands to Christmas Island is by ship, which must be chartered.
Please designate your donations to go toward this worthwhile effort in one of the most isolated and impoverished corners of the world.
Cost for Dr. Rutgards’ transportation and lodging will be $3,000. The sailing vessel SV Kwai, from Honolulu, is scheduled to be in the region of the Line Islands in February and can be chartered for $5,000. Total cost to bring sight to these deserving islanders: $8,000. One hundred percent of your donation will go to the cause you designate.
