Among the many good hearted volunteers working behind the scenes to help islanders in need is a great dentist from Southern California, Dr. Steven Kirsch, DDS, who has by last count provided more than 100 dentures to the poorest of the poor on islands in the central Pacific.
For more than two years now, Steven has worked with the only dentist on Christmas Island in Kiribati, Dr. Parfaite Razafindramary, who makes dental impressions with material and supplies sent to her by Steven.
Steven, at cost, then provides the completed dentures for Dr. Parfaite to fit.
“You have no idea how joyful and appreciative my patients are,” says Dr. Parfaite. “On these islands in the central Pacific”, she says, “dental hygiene is almost non existent, resulting is lots of extractions. We work hard to teach proper hygiene, but it’s an uphill battle.”
“Dr. Parfaite, the only dentist to serve the needs of islanders on Christmas Island (Kiritimati), Tabuaerean and Teraina, is overwhelmed by patients with serious dental problems”, says PIMA president Carlton Smith. “The one bright spot in her work”, he said, “is to be able to provide dentures to some of the most needy.”
“Dr. Kirsch, out of the goodness of his heart, has helped make life a great deal easier and boosted self esteem for the people of Kiribati,” Dr. Parfaite said.
Steven is from Dallas, Texas and is a graduate of the Baylor College of Dentistry. He is with the Peter M. Kellen and Steven P. Kirsch office of Cosmetic and Family Dentistry in Lake Forest, California.
