Revered Islander Passes Away; Friends Ask for PIMA Support

Moana Kofe was more than simply a legendary and pioneering guide on Christmas Island.

Moana Kofe was more than simply a legendary and pioneering guide on Christmas Island.

Friends of renowned Christmas Island fishing guide Moana Kofe announced this week that he has passed away. They have asked that his memory be honored with a memorial fund in his name to Pacific Islands Medical Aid.

Friends at Fly Water Travel in Oregon and fishermen from throughout the world who are fortunate enough to have gone bone fishing at Christmas Island in Kiribati, say that Moana was more than a legendary guide, but truly a warm and charming human being who was deeply connected with his home island.

“Anyone fortunate enough to have spent time with Moana felt his unbridled enthusiasm to share his island and an intimate, bordering on spiritual knowledge of this beautiful place..” said Brian Gies, owner of Fly Water Travel.

It is an honor to accept donations in Moana’s name, says Carlton Smith, president of Pacific Islands Medical Aid.
